讲座题目:Coherence and Cohesion in Text
This seminar introduces teachers and students to the importance of coherence and cohesion in text. We will examine how both concepts are addressed in textbooks and high-stakes exams for secondary school students in China. We will also explore strategies for maintaining coherence and cohesion by analyzing authentic language materials published in the US.

Dr. Ally A. Zhou is Professor and Chair of Teaching English to Speakers of Other
Languages (TESOL) at Oklahoma City University. She received her Ph.D. in Second
Language Education from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education of the University
of Toronto and has taught English and teacher education courses at universities in China,
Canada, Singapore, and the U.S. Her teaching and research focus on second language
acquisition, second language writing, grammar instruction, grammar for writing, English
for academic purposes, and discourse analysis. She has published in peer-reviewed
journals and books and has presented at national and international conferences, including
the World Congress of Applied Linguistics, the American Association for Applied
Linguistics, and the annual TESOL International Convention & English Language Expo.
She was the Higher Education and Applied Linguistics Chair for Oklahoma Teachers of
English to Speakers of Other Languages and Associate Editor for American Review of China Studies. She served on the U.S. Student Fulbright National Screening Committee and is a manuscript reviewer for the journal Language Awareness.

周艾丽, 美国奥城⼤学英语作为第⼆语⾔教育系终⾝教授、系主任,加拿⼤多伦多 ⼤学 (University of Toronto) 第⼆语⾔教育学 (Second Language Education) 博⼠,阿 尔伯塔⼤学 (University of Alberta) 博⼠后。在多伦多⼤学求学期间,师从输出假说 (The Output Hypothesis) 提出者及第⼆语⾔习得社会⽂化论 (Sociocultural Theory)提 出者之⼀ Merrill Swain 教授, 第⼆语⾔习得理论家、《语⾔习得机制》(How Languages are Learned) 的作者之⼀ Nina Spada 教授,和世界著名应⽤语⾔学家、 第⼆语⾔写作教育家 Alister Cumming 教授。她的教学及研究领域涵盖第⼆语⾔习 得、第⼆语⾔写作、语法教学法、学术英语、话语分析、语篇分析、国际汉语教师 师资培训及定性研究⽅法论等。她先后在中国、美国、加拿⼤、新加坡的⾼等院校 从事英语教师师资教育和英语教学的⼯作,并于 2009 年起在北京、⼴州等市培训 中⼩学英语及海外汉语教师。她在国际权威学术杂志及书刊上发表过多篇有关英语 学术写作、实⽤英语语法教学和⽬标导向性语⾔学习的论⽂。 周艾丽博⼠曾任美 国学⽣富布赖特评选委员会 (U.S. Student Fulbright National Screening Committee) 委员及《语⾔认知》(Language Awareness) 的审稿。她于 2008 ⾄ 2012 年间担任美 国奥克拉荷马州英语作为第⼆语⾔教学教师协会 (OKTESOL) ⾼等教育及应⽤语⾔ 学主席,并于 2010 ⾄ 2014 年间任国际学术杂志《中国研究学刊》(American Review of China Studies) 的副主编。
